Motorcycle event management

The love of motorcycle travel

I once read, some time ago, a response to the question, "What is the attraction of riding motorcycles, especially for travel?"

The response was simple. "If I have to tell you, you'll never know".

I believe that for many, this holds true. For those who are interested in travelling on motorcycles, read on. For those who are not, that's OK too. It's just one of those things that make us unique and human, as real as the difference between cat people and dog people.

Horizons Unlimited

Around 2010, a group of people invited me to help out at an event in Cooroy, Queensland, called HU Queensland 2010. I had no idea on what I was in for. Which was good, as Horizons Unlimited has been a hugely positive influence in my life since. I've met inspiring people, not just because they ride motorcycles, but their positive views on life. Several have become lifelong friends. You can find out more by going to:

HU Queensland 2026

After a hiatus due to both COVID-19 and a shortage of volunteers, HU started up again in Queensland in 2025. We assembled a small team of volunteers and held a reboot event which went fairly well. I did make a few mistakes with a schedule that did not have enough time for socialising, for example. In 2026, we will be doing it all again, and applying the knowledge and wisdom fo what went well, and combining that with the reflections on what needs to improve.

If you are interested, visit the link in the above section for more information. As a calendar date claimer though, here are the bare essentials:

  • Dates: Friday 1st May 2026 to Sunday 3rd May 2026 inclusive.
  • Location. Kokoda Park, 213 Mulgowie Road, Thornton. That's about 20 minutes ride past Laidley in Queensland's Lockyer Valley.

Why do I do it?

There are a number of reasons that I remain involved.
  • HU gives me a chance to reflect on leadership. Organising an event of 100+ motorcyclists from across the world, all with a volunteer team has taught me many things.
  • To learn and grow from the incredible life experiences that other people bring to the event.
  • I have met people through HU that have added so much value to life and I hope that others will too.
  • After all bills are paid and expenses met, the remaining net proceeds go to the Happy Paws Happy Heart foundation. I am a huge believer in the work that they do
  • I love motorcycles (almost as much as cats)..

Long term, I hope to be able to encourage growth in this area with HU events in NSW and Victoria. So I'm always looking for people interested in volunteering further.
